The surname Fox in Ireland is an anglicized form of the Old Gaelic Irish "Mac a'tSionnaigh" (son of the Fox).
Tadhg O'Caharny (Carney / Kearney), King of Teffia in the 11th century was called Sionnach (The Fox), the family subsequently were know by the surname Fox. Teffia was the western division of ancient Meath.
Teffia is the latinised version of the Irish name Teabhtha, which comprised the present day Co. Westmeath and parts of Co. Offaly and Co. Longford.
